How to repurpose long videos into Shorts
A method for cutting a long-form video into short clips without losing the point.
A long video usually only reaches the audience that finds it on one platform. Cutting it into several short clips lets the same effort reach discovery-driven audiences on Shorts, Reels, and TikTok. Here's a practical method.
1. Find moments that stand alone
A good short clip works without the surrounding long video. Look for moments that make a complete point in 15-60 seconds - a single tip, a clear answer to a question, or a surprising visual. If a moment needs five minutes of context to make sense, it isn't a clip - keep looking.
2. Add a hook to the start
Short-form viewers decide in the first few seconds. Rewrite the opening of each clip as a hook that sets up the payoff - a question, a promise, or a visual change. The original long-video intro usually doesn't work as a short-form hook. See how to create better video hooks.
3. Add on-screen text
Many short-form viewers watch without sound, at least at first. On-screen text that restates the hook and key points helps them follow instantly - and it's also more accessible.
4. Write platform-specific text
A Shorts title, a Reels caption, and a TikTok caption aren't the same. Write a short, platform-aware caption and a focused set of hashtags for each clip rather than copying one across all three.
5. Spread them out
Publishing five clips on the same day from the same video can cannibalize itself. Spread clips across days or weeks, and keep each in your content store so you can schedule them. See how Uppload handles repurposing and scheduling.
